What is the purpose of this study, and who is leading it?
We are asking you to participate in a research study aimed at examining the impact of coercive control of new religious movements on former members’ identity reconstruction and their need to belong. This study is being conducted by Coulibaly Boali (boali.coulibaly@ulb.be) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, under the supervision of Professor Kotsou Ilios of the Faculty of Psychology, Educational Sciences and Speech and Language therapy, and is part of the work associated with a master’s thesis in psychological sciences.
This study involves completing a questionnaire on LimeSurvey that includes: sociodemographic questions, questions about the religious movement, the Group Psychological Violence Scale, the Self-Concept Clarity Scale, and the Need to Belong Scale. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Participation and Withdrawal
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may choose not to participate, and if you decide to participate, you may stop answering questions or performing the task at any time and close your browser window without any adverse consequences. The researcher must provide you with all necessary explanations regarding this study. You have the right to receive answers to your questions about the procedures before or after the study by sending an email to boali.coulibaly@ulb.be
Data Confidentiality and Security
All data collected in this study is anonymous and will be stored confidentially. Neither the researchers nor any third parties will have access to your identity, which cannot be linked to your responses to the questionnaire. Data resulting from your participation in this research may be shared as part of another study related to this one and may be compiled into databases accessible to the scientific community. The data we share is not identifiable, so no one will know which data is yours or even that you participated.

Who reviewed this study?
This study was reviewed by an independent Ethics Committee, namely the Ethics Advisory Committee of the Faculty of Psychology, Educational Sciences and Speech and Language therapy. Under no circumstances should you interpret the Ethics Advisory Committee’s approval as an incentive to participate in this study.
